Departure of the historic boss, massive layoffs, “bad” buzz with the multiple regulatory changes… the last two years of the live streaming platform Twitch are starting to look like a crisis taking hold. Backtracking. Between the end of 2021 and the start of the following financial year, several Twitch leaders take turns taking flight.
The reason ? Disagreements with the new strategy. Specializing in video games, the platform (bought for nearly $1 billion by Amazon in 2014) seeks to further monetize its activity, which is structurally loss-making. It then broadens its spectrum to other types of entertainment (including sport) in order to increase its audience. To the detriment of the historic community of gaming “streamers” – a source of the platform that they feed with content –, with whom the link is weakening.
