(CNN) – Tropical Depression 14 has become Tropical Storm Milton, according to a special update from the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Tropical Storm Milton has sustained winds of 40 miles per hour (64.3 km/h) at its center. It is located 220 miles (354.0 km/h) from Veracruz, Mexico. Milton is forecast to strengthen and bring life-threatening impacts to parts of Florida’s west coast next week.

This is the 13th named system of the season. The letter “M” storm typically doesn’t occur until October 25, so we’re ahead of schedule for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

“The depression will become a tropical storm later in the day and a hurricane early Monday. The system could become a major hurricane as it moves through the central and eastern Gulf of Mexico,” the report detailed. “Hurricane and storm surge watches are likely required for portions of Florida on Sunday,” the NHC said in an advisory ahead of Milton becoming a tropical storm.

The report also noted that the system may produce rainfall of 2 to 4 inches (50 to 100 mm) in parts of the northern Yucatan Peninsula and western Cuba.

“Heavy rain will also affect parts of Florida on Sunday and Monday well in advance of the tropical system, with heavy rain more directly related to the system expected Tuesday into Wednesday. “These rainfalls bring the risk of flash, urban and area flooding, along with isolated minor to moderate riverine flooding,” the NHC said.

The forecast in Mexico

The National Water Commission of Mexico (Conagua) indicated this Saturday that the circulation of tropical storm Milton will cause heavy to intense occasional rains in the northeast and east of the country, in addition to strong winds in Tamaulipas and Veracruz.

A group of factory workers in Tennessee were swept away by Helene. Their families say they were not allowed to leave work in time to flee.

“Very heavy rains are forecast, with occasional intense rains (75 to 150 mm) in Tamaulipas and Veracruz; heavy rains with very strong spots (50 to 75 mm) in Nuevo León and Puebla; as well as showers with occasional heavy rains (25 to 50 mm) in San Luis Potosí and Hidalgo,” the report detailed.

Among the recommendations, Conagua advised “to take extreme precautions for the general population in the areas of the mentioned states due to rain, wind and waves (including maritime navigation) and to comply with the recommendations issued by the authorities of the National Civil Protection System.”
