The weather is deteriorating in Martinique and the effects of the storm are increasingly noticeable. The vigilance level changes from yellow to orange for heavy rain and thunderstorms. It remains yellow for wave-submersion.

Tropical storm Fiona is located at the gates of the Guadeloupe archipelago, it approaches La Désirade. According to Météo France, its “center should cross Guadeloupe between Friday followingnoon and the beginning of the night from Friday to Saturday“. The sister island is now on red alert for heavy rains and thunderstorms, orange for high winds and waves-submersion.
“Martinique is away from the most severe effects generated by Fiona“, indicates the meteorologists. Good news, but that does not mean that the island will not feel anything. Moreover, the level of vigilance has gone from yellow to orange concerning heavy rains and thunderstorms. It remains yellow for waves -submersion.
This system is generating heavy precipitation and thunderstorms until Sunday morning. The strongest of this rainy-stormy episode should occur in the night from Friday to Saturday and a good part of the day on Saturday. In addition, strong gusts of wind of around 70 to 80 km/h are to be feared near these stormy showers. Sea conditions deteriorated as the storm passed.
Cumulations of 30 to 50mm are expected in 3 hours, this Friday September 16th. More marked accumulations, of the order of 50 to 80 mm in 3 hours are expected from the evening until Saturday.
On both sides, Atlantic and Caribbean, the sea is deepening under the effects of the storm.
“Fiona directs an energetic swell from the North-East to the Atlantic coast, average troughs of 3m to 3m50 are expected until Saturday midday“.
Otherwise, “the wind is moving towards the south sector, in the wake of the phenomenon, and causes unusual agitation on the Caribbean coast. Average troughs of 0m60 to 1m20 are expected from next night“.
The sea gradually subsides from Sunday.
The rainfall totals show 20 to 30 mm in 12 hours.
Average troughs of 3m10 with periods of 10 to 13 seconds were recorded by the Basse-Pointe wave recorder.
