Tropical cyclone will cause torrential rains between September 15 and 19: Conagua

The National Water Commission (Conagua) reported that a low pressure system, with the possibility of evolving into a Tropical Depression, is forming in the Mexican Pacific, which will cause torrential rains and other effects in several states of the Republic for five days, between September 15 and 19.

This afternoon, the center of the low pressure was located approximately 270 kilometers (km) south-southeast of Puerto Ángel, Oaxaca, and that the system interacts with an extended low pressure channel.

In a press conference, authorities of the National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported that the system will cause torrential rains, in the following states, in addition to possible overflows of rivers and streams and flooding in low-lying areas of:

  • Chiapas
  • oaxaca
  • Guerrero
  • Veracruz
  • Michoacan
  • Tabasco
  • Mexico City

In some of those entities that have a coast, such as Oaxaca, Guerrero and Michoacán, waves of 2 to 4 meters are expected.

Alejandra Margarita Méndez Girón, coordinator of the SMN indicated that it is forecast that on Thursday, September 15, the system will be located off the coasts of Oaxaca and Guerrero, and that on Friday it will move to the northwest between the limits of said entities.

This low pressure system is expected to enter the Costa Chica and Acapulco between Saturday morning or afternoon.

The federal official added.

The most affected entity is expected to be Guerrero, where the system will make landfall next Saturday, possibly as a tropical depression, characterized by constant maximum winds of less than or equal to 64 kilometers per hour.

The authorities announced that they are also monitoring the formation of a low pressure system in the Pacific and that next week it could gain strength in the direction of the Baja California peninsula.

Due to this phenomenon and others such as the monsoon trough and low pressure areas, heavy to very heavy rains with electric shocks and possible hail fall are forecast for the rest of the day in:
