Tropical Cyclone Warning for Hurricane Ernesto

The Cuban Institute of Meteorology (Insmet) has issued the following tropical cyclone warning.

In its report for August 17, 2024, Insmet’s Forecast Center has warned that Hurricane Ernesto is moving away from Bermuda in the North Atlantic.

Hurricane Ernesto, after hitting Bermuda today, continues to move away in the waters of the North Atlantic.

During the day, the hurricane weakened and now has maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour, with higher gusts and a minimum pressure that has risen to 976 hectopascals, so it remains a category one hurricane on the Saffir Simpson scale, with a maximum of five. It is moving towards the north-northeast with a speed of 10 kilometers per hour.

At 6 p.m., the center of the hurricane was estimated at 33.4 degrees north latitude and 63.4 degrees west longitude, a position that places it approximately 130 kilometers northeast of the Bermuda Islands.

What will happen with Hurricane Ernesto this Sunday?

Over the next 12 to 24 hours, Hurricane Ernesto will maintain the same course, gradually inclining its trajectory toward the northeast, and increasing its speed somewhat, with little change and intensity, to lose its tropical characteristics in the waters of the North Atlantic as it approaches the seas southeast of Newfoundland.

This tropical cyclonic organism does not pose a danger to Cuba, it is only of interest to navigation in the North Atlantic.

Weather in Cuba

According to the part According to Cuban TV, rain and thunderstorms have increased in much of Cuba. These conditions have been encouraged by the presence of a low altitude, located over the western region at about 9 or 12 km above sea level.

Precipitation has been strong and intense in some periods and locations. The Las Tunas weather station reported 79 mm of precipitation, with a wind gust of 73 km/h associated with electrical activity.

This Sunday, the passage of a tropical wave through the seas south of the eastern region will also favor precipitation processes.

The morning will be cloudy in most of the country, only partially cloudy in some localities, mainly in the westernmost part. During the afternoon, it will be cloudy with showers, rain and thunderstorms, mainly from Matanzas to Guantánamo. These precipitations will be more numerous in Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo, and more isolated in the western region.
