Tropical cyclone threatens the Colombian Caribbean coast

The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam) announced that the tropical wave found in the Caribbean Sea very possibly becoming a potential Tropical Cyclone Twoin the coming days.

The entity pointed out that in the next 48 hours this phenomenon might impact the coastal areas of La Guajira, Santa Marta, Cesar and Magdalenawhich can generate increased rainfall and thunderstorms.

“The probability to date is that, around Friday, July 1, it might be classified as a hurricane over the western Caribbean Sea, favoring heavy rainfall and increased waves and wind in the area, iIncluding the archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina”, declared the Ideam.

For her part, the director of Ideam, Yolanda González Hernández, pointed out that the organization is undergoing special monitoring with the National Risk Management System, with the aim of keep the community informed regarding the tropical cyclone that might pass through this area of ​​the country.

One of the recommendations delivered by Ideam to the municipal and departmental risk management councils was to evaluate the preventive measures, and the necessary actions in the face of a possible risk due to the increase in waves and wind.

Due to this emergency, the Dagran of the department of Antioquia alerted the municipalities. “We alert the municipalities, but above all we go to the principle of co-responsibility and self-care of the community,” said the director of Dagran, Jaime Enrique Gómez.

On November 16, 2020, San Andrés and Providencia experienced a chapter similar to what might happen with tropical cyclone two, as the category 5 hurricane Iota left almost 77,000 families affected.

The departments most affected by Hurricane Iota were Antioquia, Norte de Santander, Cundinamarca, Santander, Bolívar, Cauca, Risaralda, Sucre, Atlántico and Chocó.
