The British König Charles III. was honored on Saturday for the first time since his accession to the throne with the “Trooping the Color” birthday parade. After the royals had taken part in a procession on horseback or by carriage, the overflight of Royal Air Force military planes and helicopters over Buckingham Palace marked the conclusion and climax of Trooping the Color as the royal family waved to the crowd from the balcony – while the youngest participating royal stole, Prinz Louis, King Charles II and the rest of the Royal Family the show.

Dressed up smartly, the three mini royals took part in the parade for their grandfather Charles. Bright sunshine sometimes made it difficult for George, Charlotte and Louis to smile at the crowds. At numerous moments, it appeared that William and Kate’s children were blinded by the sun.

Louis, however, had a completely different problem: Apparently, the little prince felt bothered by bad smells while he was traveling with his siblings in the carriage to the palace, which is why he – visibly “not amused” – nonchalantly held his nose.

When he and his family watched the overflight of military aircraft and Royal Air Force helicopters from the palace balcony, the anger was forgotten once more: Prince Louis was very enthusiastic regarding the show in the sky and the cheering royal fans in front of the palace, what he expressed with wild gestures and exuberant grimaces.

“Trooping the Color” always takes place in June, regardless of the monarch’s actual birthday (Charles on November 14; Queen Elizabeth II once on April 21), because that’s when the weather is usually at its best in England. Despite the clouds, it was dry in London on Saturday and not quite as hot as in the previous days, when the thermometer showed almost 30 degrees. The tradition goes back to 1760.
