Triumph at Ironman Klagenfurt: Lotte Wilms and Mathias Petersen Take the Win

With a race to catch up following swimming, Laura Zimmermann made it from seventh to third place at the Ironman Carinthia-Klagenfurt. The Dutchman Lotte Wilms, on the other hand, achieved a start-to-finish victory. Second is the Austrian Gabriele Maria Obmann. In the men’s category, Denmark’s Mathias Petersen won ahead of Australian Cameron Wurf and Austria’s Georg Enzenberger.

The competition didn’t stand a chance once morest Lotte Wilms. The Dutchwoman won the Ironman Klagenfurt with a start-finish victory following 8:56:51 hours. Behind Wilms, Austria’s Gabriele Maria Obmann finished second in 9:02:55 hours. Third place went to Germany’s Laura Zimmermann, who finished the race following 9:04:04 hours. In the men’s category, Mathias Petersen from Denmark also clearly prevailed following 7:56:39 hours and was the only athlete to remain below the eight-hour mark. He was followed by the Australian Cameron Wurf in second place following a total of 8:02:42 hours. Local hero Georg Enzenberger took third place on the podium with a finish time of 8:08:28 hours.

The women’s race

Lotte Wilms had already distanced her competitors from the swim over the 3.8 kilometers in Lake Wörthersee and got out of the water following 48:31 minutes. Italy’s Fabia Maramotti (52:48 minutes) and South Africa’s Jade Nicole Roberts (53:21 minutes) followed with a gap of more than four minutes. In seventh place, Laura Zimmermann was already 12:23 minutes behind (1:00:55 hours). In front of her was Gabriele Maria Obmann, who came sixth from Lake Wörthersee following 59:03 minutes.

Zimmermann leads the chasing group

On the bike, Wilms gradually increased her lead over her closest pursuers following the swim, and was more than eleven minutes ahead of her two competitors, who had meanwhile swapped places, halfway through the 180 kilometers. In the meantime, Zimmermann had also lost more time on the leader, but far less than the chasing duo. As a quartet with Obmann, her compatriot Lisa-Maria Dornauer and Brit Simone Mitchell, the German was around 14 minutes behind and was preparing to become Wilms’ first chasing group when they conceded Roberts and Maramotti. The Italian and the British fell out of the group during the race. Wilms switched to running shoes following 4:51:55 on the bike. Zimmermann followed 9:22 minutes (bike split: 4:49:15 hours) later, seven seconds ahead of Roberts. The chairman followed in fourth regarding a minute later.

Wilms controls the action

On the running course, Wilms controlled what was happening in view of the comfortable lead. Laura Zimmermann was able to delay the attack by regarding ten kilometers, but then the Austrian passed. After the 42.195 kilometers, Lotte Wilms finally had a lead of 6:04 minutes over the local hero (9:02:55 hours) with a time of 8:56:51 hours. Zimmermann secured a place on the “podium” in 9:04:04 hours.

The men’s race

In the men’s race, Lukas Wojt first put his stamp on the race and led the field following 3.8 kilometers and 44:04 minutes in front of a group of nine pursuers around Petersen (47:37 minutes) and Wurf (47:45 minutes) from the Wörthersee . The Australian showed his full strength on the bike and overtook the German before the half-time mark. In the second half, Petersen, Enzenberger and Frenchman Arnaud Gilloux caught up with Wojt and the quartet covered the 180 kilometers together in T2. There, in 4:12:53 hours on the bike, litter had already switched to running shoes five minutes earlier.

Wojt loses ground, Petersen passes the throw

In the third discipline, Wojt then lost ground. While in the lead, Wurf had to see Petersen taking his legs in his hands and getting closer and closer. Gilloux and Enzenberger mightn’t keep the pace. After 20 kilometers, litter’s cushion had shrunk to one minute. The Dane kept up the pace and took the lead at the beginning of the second half of the marathon, which he gradually extended to finally cross the finish line first following 7:56:39 hours (running split: 2:45:07 hours). After 8:02:42, he defended second place, Georg Enzenberger completed the podium in third place following 8:08:28 hours. Lukas Wojt finally crossed the line in twelfth place (8:29:18 hours), one place behind compatriot Tim Meyer, who had worked his way up to eleventh place in 8:27:38 hours.
