TripMode lets you block background downloads on Mac

If you have one iPhone, you’ve probably already taken a look at the “Cellular” section of the Settings app to see how much each app has consumed your internet. On macOS, although you can see how much data is being received and sent by Activity Monitor (Activity Monitor), there isn’t a feature similar to iOS natively.

This absence is understandable, since the home networks to which Macs are usually connected do not usually have franchise limitations, as mobile networks do. But on some occasions — like when we connect the Mac to the iPhone’s internet via Personal Hotspot (Personal Hotspot) — this data would be quite useful. The good news is you can get them on your computer with a third-party app like TripMode.

As its name already indicates, TripMode helps you save data (and consequently money) in situations where the internet is limited (like when traveling) or even to better manage processes when using networks with slow connections, in which the control of each byte becomes important.

But TripMode, which is currently in version 3, is much more than just an app for viewing network traffic, as it also allows you to block processes that are running in the background, such as software updates or applications that are continually accessing the internet (such as iCloud and Messages).

Available at all times in the menu bar of the operating system, TripMode remembers the networks on which you have previously activated it and activates its settings whenever it detects when you connect an iPhone to the computer, also showing the amount of data remaining in the used network allowance by smartphone.

Also featuring a real-time monitor of network traffic (something similar to what already exists in the Activity Monitor), the app makes it possible to analyze the amount of data used in the last day, week or month — including detailing the specific processes of each application (like Safari websites, for example).

Fully compatible with macOS Ventura, TripMode 3 can be purchased with a one-time purchase for $85 on their 1 Mac plan, for $130 on the 2 Mac plan (with a free license of TripMode 2 for older Macs) or for $300 for up to 5 Macs (one free license of TripMode 2 and one free license of TripMode for Windows).
