In Gabon 850,000 voters are called to ballot this Saturday. A triple vote since in addition to the presidential election it is also a legislative and municipal election. A one-ballot election. Ali Bongo Ondimba is seeking a third consecutive term as president against 13 other candidates.

In Gambia, Yaya Jammeh is more than ever in the dock. The former Gambian president ousted from power in 2017 and who currently lives in exile in Equatorial Guinea is accused of being responsible for the murder of more than 200 people in addition to other abuses. At the origin of this lawsuit, the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission of The Gambia set up by current President Adama Barrow. From 2017 to 2021, it investigated human rights violations that occurred during Jammeh’s 22 years in power. But to this day there remain several cases of disappearance unresolved by the commission. The families of the victims are still unable to mourn.

It is a spectacular stone with unique reflections present in Ethiopian soil: the opal. Discovered in 2008 in the north of the country, it quickly propelled Ethiopia to the rank of second world exporter. The sale of opal brought in $2.6 million in 2021 and $10 million for all gemstones. But that’s nothing compared to what the opal could generate if exploited even better. Lack of appropriate policy and legal framework, skilled manpower, private investment and local and global market promotion has hampered the growth of the sector. A situation that should change: several measures aim to increase the importance of mining up to 17% of GDP.
