Triple Negative Breast Cancer: Awareness, Diagnosis, and Treatment” or “Empowering Young Women with Triple Negative Breast Cancer: Early Detection and Treatment

Triple negative breast cancer represents 15% of breast cancers. It affects relatively young women. The latter are not followed in screening programs and the risk of a lack of diagnosis is therefore greater. Surveillance must be developed. Testimony.

Mélaine is 33 years old. She is the mother of 2 children, the youngest is seven months old. She learned on the first day of the school year that she had triple negative cancer. The diagnosis came suddenly following a breast ultrasound. Thanks to this early diagnosis, treatment might be put in place and the chances of recovery are very high.

Triple negative breast cancer is poorly understood. It particularly affects young people. 40% of women are under 40 years old. Mélaine having a family history, her GP prescribed a breast ultrasound. Very rare at its age. An excellent reflex since with an early diagnosis, on a localized cancer, the chances of cure are 80%.

I was very far from imagining that I might be affected. My objective is to raise awareness among young women, general practitioners, gynecologists to do more detection, palpation, awareness because it happens to many young women today.

At the localized stage, “2 out of 3 women will be permanently cured of triple negative cancer thanks to chemotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, but there are still women who relapse with very heavy treatments” explains Olivier Tredan, head of the medical oncology department at the Léon Bérard center.

Automatic screening is currently carried out at age 50. It is therefore essential that women be vigilant. Regular self-palpation of the breasts is strongly recommended.

Triple negative represents 15% of breast cancers and is particularly aggressive. In the presence of metastases, five-year survival is very low. This is the case of Vanessa Hett. After going into remission, his cancer returned and affected his brain and lungs. Today, she is an ambassador for the association Pink triplets. This collective of patients leads a crusade once morest the disease.

The essence of our action is to bring regarding innovative treatments and new therapeutic alternatives and to finance research dedicated to triple negative breast cancer.

Unlike hormone-dependent cancers which benefit from very effective treatment protocols – statistics show 95% success – triple negative cancers do not yet have the same effectiveness in treatments. “We must make our voice heard so that there are dedicated research programs”.

An approach which is gradually bearing fruit in the medical profession. Olivier Tredan, head of the medical oncology department at the Léon Bérard center, confirms this. “We have also made progress because patient associations came to encourage us. Their priority is obviously support for the illness, but also that they can have rapid access to therapeutic innovation. There are new medications arriving and thanks to them, they have quickly arrived in the routine of our care“.

The collective is also campaigning for the development of clinical trials for “triplets” at the end of life to advance science.
