trip of more than 11 hours for $70 2024-07-21 01:31:56

The Cuban Minister of Transport has announced the reestablishment of the Sancti Spíritus – Havana train, popularly known as the “Spiritual Train.”

This service, suspended months ago due to a lack of locomotives and passenger cars, will resume operations next Thursday, July 25, according to a report from the website of Facebook.

During a broadcast on May 31, Luis Roberto Roses, general director of the Cuban Railways Union (UFC), confirmed the return of the Sancti Spiritus train, responding to the high demand of the population.

This means of transport is essential for connecting communities that do not have national train stops, offering a long-awaited alternative means of transport.

Frequencies of the so-called “spiritual train” in Cuba

The train will run twice a week, leaving Sancti Spíritus on Sundays and Thursdays at 7:10 pm, and returning from Havana on Mondays and Fridays at 9:45 pm.

The trip will last approximately 11 hours and 30 minutes, with a total of 22 stops. “The service will allow the transfer of people in towns and communities that do not have stops on the national train route,” said Roses.

Capacities and price of the Sancti Spiritus train

The train will have a medium-sized locomotive and five cars with a capacity of 334 seated passengers. Four of these cars, model “Gaviota DM-11”, are being prepared in the San Luis railway workshop, in Santiago de Cuba, while a “Taíno” model car is being repaired in the Caibarién workshop, in Villa Clara.

The price of the service from origin to destination will be 70.00 pesos, with adjusted rates for intermediate sections. Initially, tickets will be sold in person at railway stations. However, the UFC and the company Viajero are working to implement online sales in the near future.
