KOLKATA ∙ Around Rs 20 crore was recovered during a raid by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at the residence of a minister’s aide in connection with the teacher recruitment scam in Bengal. The raid was on the residence of Arpita Mukherjee, a close aide of Trinamool Congress minister Partha Chatterjee.
Bundles of 2000 and 500 rupee notes were seized. Their pictures went viral on social media. The ED said in a press release that it is believed that the money recovered in the raid may be related to the School Service Commission recruitment scam. ED sought the help of bank employees to count the money with the help of note counting machine.
Around 20 mobile phones were seized from the spot. Raids were also conducted at centers related to another minister Paresh C. Adhikari, MLA Manik Bhattacharya etc. Partha Chatterjee, who was earlier education minister, was transferred to the industries department following the allegations. The Trinamool responded that the ED raid was part of BJP’s strategy to harm its political opponents.
