Tried out foldable charging station for traveling with Qi2

Meanwhile, Anker has also joined the Qi2 trend. The foldable 3-in-1 charging station is primarily designed for Apple users, although Qi2 is not widely adopted yet. I have always been a fan of the quality and material selection in Nomad’s product range when it comes to wireless charging stations. The Anker MagGo 3-in-1 piqued my interest from a different angle: it is foldable, making it a great gadget for traveling. This new charging station is somewhat similar to the Anker Cube, which is still available in the market, but more compact. Tried out foldable charging station for traveling with Qi2

The MagGo 3-in-1 features three charging surfaces: one with Qi2 and MagSafe compatibility, one for (fast) charging the Apple Watch, and another charging pad for true wireless earbuds. The package includes a 40-watt power adapter with power delivery support and a USB-C connection. A 30-watt power adapter should be sufficient for general use.

All of this is contained in a case weighing just under 195 grams. This weight is manageable for travel, although I would have preferred the charging station to be slightly thinner—but that’s a minor complaint that leaves room for a future iteration. When folded, the charging station measures 89 x 60 x 25 millimeters.

The included power supply is similarly compact: Anker’s Nano series power supplies have always been compact, and here you miss the opportunity to include such a more miniature power pack. A practical feature is that the power pack, cable, and the charging station itself are all separate components. You can easily swap out any part for a different power pack or longer cable. This sustainable approach ensures that if a component fails, you can easily replace it. Additionally, the charging station can be disconnected, allowing the power pack to be used with a Mac or an iPad. If you choose wisely (or are conservative with the 40 watts), you could be on the move with just one power pack. For faster smartphone charging, a current iPhone or smartphone can still charge directly from the power pack via USB-C, and the cable can be unplugged quickly. Even without a power pack connected, the charging station functions effectively as a stand.

The charging station itself is well built and gives off a high-quality impression. The choice of plastic material doesn’t detract from this quality. The magnet firmly holds the smartphone in place on the charging station. It’s so secure that when you lift the smartphone, the charging station lifts off the table with it.

The MagGo 3-in-1 can be adjusted to various angles. This feature allows you to charge a smartphone even when it is folded, without needing to use the corresponding magnets. Depending on the angle, the smartphone display may wobble more or less during use. When in an upright position, an iPhone 15 Pro Max fits just barely and nearly touches the surface below; with certain cases, this surface can be reached—though this isn’t a serious issue. In other respects, the Pro Max model seems to be tightly calculated. The magnetically attached 15 Pro Max can just be rotated between portrait and landscape orientations; this nearly scrapes against the camera bump, and it won’t fit past with the appropriate protective cover. Elevating the charging surface slightly could alleviate this issue.

The charging station is also designed to support fast charging for the Apple Watch. The charging puck for the smartwatch is embedded in the base. When unfolded, it accommodates a watch with a continuous strap, like the Solo Loops. However, due to the proprietary charging solution for the Apple Watch, it highlights the pressing need for a universal charging standard for smartwatches. Anker, like several other manufacturers, does not have a dedicated model for the Pixel Watch or similar devices in the Android ecosystem.

In conclusion, the Anker MagGo 3-in-1 lives up to its promise by charging three devices wirelessly at maximum speed—all within a compact design. It serves as an ideal travel companion, especially if you are traveling with an Apple Watch, effectively eliminating the need to carry extra cables for the watch and true wireless earbuds. At home, the charging station also performs well in a stationary setup. Anker retails it for just under 88 euros, and if you can wait, you might find it at a lower price during sales. Overall, it presents a fair deal for what it offers.
