Tribute to Professor Malick Ndiaye: a fruitful and generous spirit (By Alassane K. KITANE)

I had decided not to pay homage to the deceased anymore, because it may seem indecent to produce so many texts as if one found pleasure in these funeral orations. But what to do ? We are almost always forced to survive some friends and to be survived by others in this land of pain and tears that we share with them. We will always mourn friends, relatives and colleagues. We will also be ” cry “ A day. Death is certainly not our destination, but we are all called to taste its bitter flavor before reaching our final home. The first victory against death is therefore naturally this ability to perpetuate the work and the name of the dead through writing and speech. So Malick left to join the heavens. Oh my God ! What a man committed to the future of his people. This man is fundamentally passionate about standing Senegal. History will remember that you wrote, demonstrated, awakened your fellow citizens by public speaking. You have been a model of active citizenship. We who have known you at university and who have maintained friendly relations with you know how much service you have rendered to this nation. Malick Ndiaye taught almost as he lived: he was passionate, full of initiative. One could not not like sociology after attending a course by Malick, especially on the stratifications of traditional Senegalese society. But Malick knew above all that education is above all training in citizenship, preparation and nurturing of the future in and through the present. It is very difficult these days to see an intellectual as committed to the cause of the lower classes as Malick. He was on the ground all the time with an array of initiatives. Malick was a dreamer as are all great intellectuals: he wanted to subject the world to the nobility and accuracy of Ideas. All the time, Malick was busy thinking or making furrows to unite Senegalese intellectuals and patriots around something big. Malick is also a revelation that ended up being a compass for his civic actions. I don’t remember having met him without the discussion ending with an incursion into Massalikul Jinàan. This text by Xadimul Mustafa had become a viaticum or a vademecum for the path to salvation that he had paved for himself and that he proposed in his time. Passionate about Massalik, as he abbreviated it, he had made this text a kind of intellectual and spiritual rebirth for him. Men read books discover in them things that can be communicated and others that are almost ineffable (not because they are unknown, but for fear of not being understood!). Malick was visibly dazzled (perhaps visited) by something in his readings of Massalik: let this then be his way to Heaven! Alassane K. KITANE
