According to ERT, the driver of the garbage truck had finished his work and was carried away by the heavy vehicle, resulting in very serious injuries. He was immediately transferred to the Thriasio hospital, where he breathed his last.
The police are investigating the circumstances under which the tragic event took place. Among other things, according to public television, it will be examined whether the handbrake was released as a result of which the garbage truck driver was dragged from the vehicle.
“It is a very difficult day for the municipality of Athens, after the loss of the life of a cleaning employee, while working, in Fyli. We express our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. We stand with all our strength next to the cleaning workers who fight hard every day to keep our city clean”, said the mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas.
“Today, a tragic accident claimed the life of a person from the family of the Municipality of Athens. Argyris left while working. We all have to stand by his family, calmly waiting for the outcome of the accident. The safety of the employees who, in adverse circumstances, go above and beyond for the good of Athens, is non-negotiable”, stated Kostas Bakoyiannis for his part.
