Tribal district Kurram’s ‘first’ music academy after militancy

Imtiaz Hussain, a young man from the tribal district of Karam, has set up a music academy in the city of Parachinar, where 50 men and women are learning musical instruments such as rabab, saxophone, dhol, harmonium, guitar and tabla.

Apart from these persons, ‘Amitaz Academy’ also organizes recorded lectures for those living in other cities and abroad.

According to Imtiaz, peace has been established in the tribal district of Karam after 20 years of unrest. ‘People’s consciousness has been awakened, now the new generation is moving towards literature and poetry.’

Imtiaz Academy was founded in 2018. “After five years, at least 50 students have registered, out of which 25 to 30 are regular students while the rest take online classes.”

He said that apart from Hangu, Kohat and Para Chinar, his online students are from Lahore and abroad from United Arab Emirates, Maldives and Syria.

According to Imtiaz, the internet speed in Karam is low due to which he records videos and shares them with students through WhatsApp.

“Most of the students in the academy are interested in the rabb because the rabb is a big part of our culture as well as the ritual. 17 to 25 students are learning Rabab here.’

Amitaz is planning to open a branch of his music academy in Kohat, while some of his friends are keen to open a similar setup in Jani Khel in North Waziristan and Zhob in Balochistan.
