In an interview, triathlete Patrick Lange talks regarding the favorites of the Ironman World Championship, the move to Nice, his tactics for victory and the limits of racing simulation on the computer.

The Ironman World Championships this Sunday (6:50 a.m. on HR television) are in Nice, not Hawaii. What does this change for you? In preparation, in mindset? As a critic of the World Cup move, have you come to terms with the new situation?

I stand by my criticism of this move and continue to say that this race belongs in Hawaii. The women’s race takes place there in October. And if you look at the registration numbers, they are very weak, as you hear. I would be very happy if the World Cup took place once more soon as usual on one day with men and women in Hawaii. Of necessity, I have become comfortable with the new challenge of Nice. I now see this as a new challenge. I won twice in Hawaii, and if I were to finish at the top in Nice now, it would show that I can fight for a world title anywhere and under completely different conditions.
