The defense lawyers announced, this Sunday, November 26, 2023, the suspension of their participation in the trial of the massacre of September 28, 2009. This decision is taken as a protest once morest their prevention from meeting their clients since the escape attempt at the central house of Conakry, on November 4.
To stem the crisis, the Minister of Justice, Alphonse Charles Wright, invites the President of the Bar, members of the Bar Council, the collective of defense lawyers, the first president of the Court of Appeal of Conakry and the prosecutor general at the Court of Appeal of Conakry “at an emergency exchange meeting, Monday November 27, 2023 at 8:00 a.m. at the chancellery to discuss all questions aimed at finding appropriate solutions to all their concerns”.
Furthermore, the Minister of Justice reiterated his department’s commitment to working for a normal course of the trial. He maintains that since the start of this trial, “no circumstance, even if exceptionally serious, has been the basis for preventing the exercise of the legal profession. On the contrary, the State has worked to create conditions to support lawyers in defending the rights of their clients, in particular by granting a special room to the ad hoc delocalized court, training linked to the trial and monthly payment of fees despite the fact that they were constituted by their clients.”
In his logic of avoiding a blockade of the trial, the Minister of Justice invites defense lawyers to contact him “with factual evidence” of any obstacle to access to the Central House of Conakry or to their clients. If the facts are proven, he promises to take all measures to sanction any violator of freedom of access to the Central House of Conakry for lawyers and their clients.
