The husband of Madissone Massy, father of her two deceased children, came to testify before the Assize Court on Tuesday as part of the trial of his wife, accused of having murdered their son Enzo, aged nine months, in July 2019.
The couple met in 2010. Two years later, he moved in, first with his parents, then with her parents and finally in an apartment in Quiévrain.
The witness has no longer had contact with his parents, civil parties to the trial, since the death of his daughter in October 2017. “My partner was devastated. We were always told it was sudden death,” he says. At the time of his son’s death, he learned that his daughter had injected the liquid, which caused the death. “We were lied to for three years.”
Two months following the death, the couple married and Madissone found herself pregnant with Enzo. “This child was wanted by both,” says her husband. However, he states that his wife was unbearable, she sent him lots of messages, which annoyed him. Madissone wanted to have him near him.
July 16 in Hornu
On July 16, 2019, the father was working when his wife called him to report that the little one was feeling unwell. He called the emergency services and returned home. “When I came home, I saw my little one with a wild look, he was conscious. I lost my temper. His grandmother was taking care of him, Madissone was crying, she was hysterical”.
The dad went looking for the ambulance, which still hadn’t arrived. He ran into her two minutes following she left. “When I came home, Enzo was in his grandmother’s arms. I let the nurses work, I stayed outside. The SMUR arrived later.”
The child was put in the ambulance. Madissone did not follow him, “because she was too shocked”. The witness assumes that his mother-in-law insisted on accompanying the little one.
The witness no longer remembers the arrival at the hospital, too moved by the events. He spent the night with his wife and child. “After the child’s death, we were suspicious.” He says that his wife fed the child with the milk he had gone to get at the end of the morning.
Transfer to Jolimont
The father spent the night of July 17 to 18 in Hornu hospital. He left at the end of the morning to look for clothes at home, and he stopped by his in-laws, because he needed to talk regarding his relationship, which was not going well following the arguments and mood swings of his wife, his little one. “I stayed for an hour and a half. Madissone called me to tell me that the child was feeling unwell once more, I told him that the child was safe in the hospital”.
The man then went to the hospital and found that his son was in intensive care. “Madissone was in panic, she was crying.” His in-laws have arrived. Madissone was arguing with her mother. “My in-laws didn’t see the point in putting the child in daycare.” He did not see the slap, but his wife told him regarding it.
The child was transferred to Jolimont. “We both agreed,” he said, although the indictment mentions that the accused was opposed to it. The witness no longer remembers these traumatic events. “When we learned that the little one was brain dead, we were shocked, she cried.”
The dad remembers that his wife sent him a text message to tell him that she preferred living with him than with Enzo. He puts this down to the depression his wife suffered from.
Live together
After the death, the couple decided to live together, “with ups and downs”. His wife never told him what happened in Hornu’s hospital room. “She feels guilty, a little,” replied the witness to a question from the president.
For the father, it is unimaginable to think that his wife might have killed his son, “because she was a loving mother”. He says that his son took the evening bottle, only with his mother, despite his efforts.
“Did she tell you that she suffocated your son by putting her hands on his chest? ”, asks the Advocate General. “No,” replies Enzo’s dad. “However, she stated that she had discussed it with her psychiatrist, her lawyers and her husband,” notes the attorney general. The witness replied that they had few discussions on the subject. “If there was a gesture on his part, I am certain that it was not intended,” he said.
Me Fabrice Guttadauria adds, “and if she tells you that this gesture was intentional? ” The witness says he would no longer be with her. “That’s what she said here, do you believe her or not? ” asks Me Guttadauria. “Deep down, no,” replies the dad.
The lawyer for the civil parties returns to another scene, which took place in June. The child was happy to see his dad, his protector, according to a witness. “My fault, my regret is having worked too much and not having been more available for my son who, every evening, held out his arms to me,” replies the father.
