Argentine media reported that eight healthcare workers will go on trial following being accused of causing the death of Diego Maradona by committing “negligent homicide”.
The football legend, who led Argentina to win the World Cup for the second time in 1986, died at the age of 60 in November 2020 due to heart failure following undergoing brain surgery days earlier.
Television station TN reported that a court in San Isidro, a city on the outskirts of the capital, Buenos Aires, rejected the defense’s appeals on a lesser charge and upheld an indictment issued a year ago by prosecutors for “negligence and ineffectiveness” in the treatment of the former Boca Juniors and Napoli player.
The reports added that the trial is unlikely to start until next year, and the defendants might face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years.
