The 6th chamber of the Charleroi Criminal Court set a new pleading date late Monday followingnoon in the trial of the death of young Ciena, aged 3 months, at the Dourlet crèche in Charleroi on the 9th. May 2016. The reopening of the debates which took place on Monday followingnoon allowed the hearing of four witnesses, including the SMUR doctor and the emergency doctor who noted the child’s death.
The investigation, which lasted more than five years, led to the indictment of three childcare workers at the crèche. The latter contest the failure to assist a person in danger. The child fell asleep around 1 p.m. and was pronounced dead shortly before 4 p.m. The child was on his stomach, contrary to the recommendations of the ONE (Birth and Childhood Office). At the end of last June, the criminal court ordered the reopening of the proceedings. To clarify the gray areas on the circumstances and time of the baby’s death, four witnesses, including doctors and medical experts who intervened during the events or in the case, were invited for hearing on Monday followingnoon.
The doctor who autopsied Ciena’s body, with the consent of the parents, indicated that “it is almost impossible to say whether the child’s prone position was the cause of his death, even if it was “There is a risk factor and it is not normal to hear a child of this age snore.” The pediatrician, who was following the baby, confirmed the absence of health problems in the child. The doctor from SMUR and the emergency doctor from Carolo hospital noted that the latter’s body presented a certain form of rigidity. A new pleading date has been set for January 24. More than two hours of debates are planned.
