Antonis, who often traveled from Crete to Piraeus, had normally boarded the “Blue Horizon” with an early ticket, but for some reason he got off for a while and when he realized that it was starting, he ran to catch up.
But he was violently pushed by the catapult, as a result of which he found himself in the sea and lost his life.
According to cretalive.gr, the trial has been scheduled for January 20, 2025 at the Piraeus Mixed Jury Court, as it has become known, and legal circles are already stressing that there is a risk for the completion of the 18 months as there are too many witnesses.
As is known, there are four defendants from the crew, the captain and the first officer who are in custody, while the second lieutenant and the first officer have been released on conditions.
At the same time, a gathering in memory of Antonis Kargiotis is being prepared in Agios Nikolaos one year after his tragic death, asking for “no cover-up of the crime”, as they say.
The gathering is expected to take place on Thursday afternoon, at 19:00, in the central Square of the city.
In a joint call, the Association of Agios Nikolaos Hospital Workers, the Agios Nikolaos Women’s Group (member of OGE), the “TALOS” Food and Tourism Workers’ Union, the IKA Pensioners Association N. Lasithiou state:
“WE INVITE ALL ORGANIZATIONS – ORGANIZATIONS – YOUTHS – CITIZENS OF AGIOS NIKOLAOS TO A GATHERING – PROTEST on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at 19:00 in the central Square of the city of Agios Nikolaos, condemning the crime that cost the life of 36-year-old Antonis.
We will not let the horrific images of the murder of our 36-year-old fellow citizen Antonis Karyotis, by the catapult of the “Blue Horizon” ship, be forgotten so that this racist brutality does not happen again.
The unions raise a voice of struggle against the extreme trivialization and devaluing of human life, condemning the criminal responsibilities of the shipping company, the Ministry of Shipping, its services, as well as some crew members.
