Clocking in and clocking out has become a ritual that employees carry out when arriving and returning from work. Even though it looks simple, clocking in and clocking out has a big impact on attendance and payroll, in addition to productivity. Therefore, companies and businesses must create a clock in and clock out process and system that is easy but accurate when used to record employee attendance.
Head of Business Mekari Talenta, a human resource (HR) solutions provider, Stevens Jethefer said that the clock in and clock out system is a critical part of workforce management for every company and business. A good clock in and clock out system accurately records employee attendance to maintain work discipline and is also integrated into the attendance and payroll systems to make payroll calculations easier.
“Therefore, the clock in and clock out system cannot be underestimated because it has a direct impact on human resource (HR) management and work productivity. The more human resources (HR) and the more complex the working hours arrangements of a company or business, the more important it is to implement “a clock in and clock out system that is automatic, efficient and easy to use by companies and employees,” he said.
He added that various companies have now turned to technology to support smooth clock in and clock out. He shared interesting trends regarding employee clock-in and clock-out habits based on Mekari Talenta data during the first quarter of 2024.
Time discipline
Every company and business has its own pattern of setting working hours. There are companies, especially in the manufacturing industry, that use the shift system and there are companies, such as those in the professional services industry, that use the flextime system.
Whatever the working hours, the data shows that in general, employees clock in an average of 9 minutes before their clock in and clock out an average of 18 minutes following their time to leave. “You can see that most employees are quite disciplined in adhering to the entry and exit schedule set by the company,” he said.

The majority of employees, or the same as 31%, clock in between 07.00-07.59. At the end of the working day, most, or equal to 24%, of employees clock out between 17.00-17.59. “Employees, especially those who work at work, choose to come early so they have time to prepare themselves for work,” he said.
Absorption of labor
Companies in the manufacturing industry are ranked first in the largest users of clock in and clock out systems, considering the large number of employees. Specifically for manufacturing companies, up to 12% of clock in and clock out are centered in West Jakarta and 8% are centered in Tangerang.
“The accuracy of arriving and returning from work has a huge impact on the level of productivity of manufacturing companies. Therefore, they prioritize the use of a good clock in and clock out system so that they can organize the work schedules of hundreds of employees according to their respective units and functions,” he said .

Morning shift
For the manufacturing industry, the most popular shift is the morning based on the majority (35%) clocking in at 08.00. “This is in accordance with the first shift which usually falls between 08.00-17.00,” he said.
Stevens added that in the future more and more cutting-edge technology will be adopted by companies and businesses to make clocking in and clocking out easier for employees. One of the latest technologies is a touchless portal so that employees no longer need to use fingerprints to take attendance.
“We see that companies have started to try touchless portals with facial recognition that can scan faces because of the added value that this technology offers, namely a higher level of security. Facial recognition reduces the possibility of misuse of identity between employees to take attendance. At the same time, technology “This speeds up clock in and clock out because employees no longer need to stop to press their fingerprints or cards into the attendance machine,” he concluded. (Z-2)
