Treatment of mucositis with phototherapy

Treatment of mucositis with phototherapy

Question from Ms. LASSARADE Florence (Gironde – Les Républicains) published on 03/10/2024

Ms. Florence Lassarade draws the attention of the Minister of Health and Access to Care to the treatment of mucositis by phototherapy. Mucositis is a painful inflammation of the mucous membranes, which can occur in the mouth (oral mucositis) or the gastrointestinal tract. It is often a complication of cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Oral mucositis is characterized by ulcers and pain in the mouth, making nutrition and hydration difficult for patients. Photobiomodulation uses low-power lasers or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to stimulate tissue repair and reduce inflammation and pain. This non-invasive treatment is effective in the treatment of mucositis induced by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Numerous clinical studies have in fact shown that phototherapy can reduce the incidence, severity and duration of mucositis in patients receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Therefore, it is increasingly recommended as a preventive and therapeutic treatment. To the extent that the use of photobiomodulation can significantly improve the quality of life of patients by reducing pain and inflammation and accelerating the healing of damaged tissues, she would like to know whether the Government is considering authorizing reimbursement for this treatment by social security.
