Born in Rokiškis
The literary scholar and director Eligijus Daugnora introduced the audience gathered in the Art and Music space of the library to the interesting aspects of the personality of Juoz Tumos-Vaižgant and the connections between his work and the famous culture and art magazine “Naujoji Romuva” published by the journalist Juoz Keliuotis between the wars.
Library director Alicija Matiukienė shared interesting details from J. Keliuotis’s French life. At just 24 years old, Mr. Keliuotis went to study at the Sorbonne University in Paris. It goes without saying that the lectures were held in French, which the young student left Lithuania without knowing at all. In just three years, he learned not only to speak and read, but also to write. The French period, acquaintances with famous Parisian artists and thinkers, such as Andre Židas, Henri Bergson, Polis Claudel, Pablo Picasso, the ideas of the French philosopher Maurice Blondel, greatly influenced J. Keliuotis’ views and the formation of a modern worldview.
A. Matiukienė also presented the “Five Creators’ Path”, which includes three routes dedicated to the overview of the lives of Juoz and Alfonso Keliņučių, Jonas and Adolfos Mekai and Juoz Miltinis. These cultural routes include Rokiškis, Birži, Panevėžys.
