Travelers Beware: Measles Outbreak in Bali – Vaccination Recommendations for Australians

In Australia, following two recent cases of measles reported in travelers returning from Bali, health authorities in New South Wales (NSW) are urging the public planning to travel overseas to ensure they is fully protected once morest measles before leaving.

Vaccination recommendation in the event of a trip to a countries with measles epidemic

Infants aged 6 to 11 months: One dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, according to a compassionate prescription framework that replaces the RTU procedure, for children aged 6 to 8 months who must travel to a high endemicity area, then 2 doses of MMR vaccine following the recommendations of the vaccination schedule in force (1 dose at the age of 12 months, then a dose between 16 and 18 months).

Children from 12 months: A 1st dose of MMR vaccine at 12 months of age and a 2nd dose between 16 and 18 months; this 2nd dose can be administered more quickly when travelling, respecting a minimum period of one month between the 2 doses.

People born following 1980 and older than 12 months: Two doses in total of MMR vaccine regardless of immunization history for rubella and mumps and regardless of history for the three diseases. Persons previously vaccinated with 2 doses and whose first dose was administered before the age of 12 months should receive a 3rd dose.

People born before 1980 : In the context of travel to an endemic country, it is recommended that people not protected once morest measles (no known history of measles or not previously vaccinated) receive a dose of MMR vaccine before departure.
