The New Year period is a time when many people dream of vacationing abroad. However, for almost 5 million Russians, this dream is unattainable due to restrictions on leaving the country. The Federal Bailiff Service unexpectedly reported that the number of citizens who are prohibited from traveling abroad due to debt continues to increase.

The number of people not allowed to travel has decreased compared to last year, but still remains at regarding 5 million people. According to the law “On Enforcement Proceedings,” Russian citizens may be prohibited from traveling abroad in case of arrears in alimony, taxes, loans, fines or utilities. The amount of debt must exceed 10 thousand rubles for alimony and compensation, and 30 thousand rubles for other types of debt.

In addition to this, on December 11, the law “On a Unified List of Grounds for the Invalidity of Passports” came into force, which obliges Russian citizens who are not allowed to travel abroad to deposit their foreign passports. This applies not only to debtors, but also to conscripts, FSB employees, persons involved in criminal cases and bankrupts. If you refuse to surrender your passport, it will be declared invalid and confiscated.

This news caused heated discussions in society. Many have expressed concern that such restrictions might seriously complicate people’s lives, especially around the holidays when many want to spend time with family abroad. However, others support such measures, arguing that they are necessary to ensure the fulfillment of financial obligations to the state and society.
