Trauma management is essential for patients following an accident, as a quick response not only physically stabilizes the patient, but also prevents long-term complications. Specialized care in the early stages improves the chances of survival and reduces morbidity, highlighting the importance of training of medical personnel and efficient coordination in emergency care.

“I have been directing the Trauma Center since 1999 and working since 1991. One of our functions is to assist the people of Puerto Rico when there are traumatic events, that is, any patient who receives a function in their body in two systems or more. , and the only center in the Caribbean is this one. Duhamed had an accident and I had the privilege of helping him,” said Dr. Pablo Rodríguez, Director of the Trauma Center.

Duhamed Thillet Lisboa has been a patient at the Trauma Center since 1991, as a result of an accident on April 25 in which he experienced severe trauma. “The doctor was the one who saved my life along with other surgeons at that time.”

Aftermath of your accident

Duhamed Thillet Lisboa shares that since that moment he has faced various challenges. In 2016, he underwent an operation related to the followingmath of the accident, returning to the doctor’s hands. Over time, he has undergone several surgical interventions due to a hernia caused by a colostomy performed at that time. Stating that so far, Dr. Pablo Rodríguez has been the only professional capable of addressing and treating this specific condition, as stated by the patient.

“He has been our patient since he was 17 years old, he is like my son, that’s how I consider him,” added the expert.

Trauma prevention

In another instance, the specialist addressed the issue of trauma prevention during the Christmas season. Although these events can occur at any time of the year due to excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages, driving under the influence, excessive speeds and failure to follow traffic rules, during Christmas two additional risk factors are added: the use of pyrotechnics and the possibility of stray bullets.

“One knows that people use alcohol to celebrate but it is out of control and many times these incidents increase as well as their severity. We are preparing to share with the family and hope to welcome the new year, but that depends on their actions. We have to become aware because we do not want to mourn the Puerto Rican people at this time,” said the doctor.

From Thillet’s perspective, the patient’s attitude plays a crucial role in avoiding depression and promoting improvement, with family unity being especially relevant during the Christmas festivities. In this context, genuine support from family members is essential, while the patient, maintaining a positive and determined attitude, must be willing to move forward and receptive to the instructions of the medical staff.

“The closest family and the union greatly influence the mental health and the progress that the patient has, the doctors, the surgeons, the nurses have to do with it, but the family always has to be present,” added Duhamed.

Trauma is highly preventable

The doctor emphasized that the traumas They constitute the main cause of mortality in young people, especially in the range of 16 to 24 years. Furthermore, he emphasizes that, when they are not fatal, traumas can lead to significant disabilities. However, he emphasizes that in up to 95% of cases, it is possible to prevent these incidents through appropriate prevention measures.

“I want to urge people, this is a special time, we all have tremendous enthusiasm and spirit, thinking that we are going to receive the year as a family are things that motivate us at Christmas, we want everyone to be there on January 1, but the The only way is to take precautions and do things the way they have to be done, we are going to prevent, we can do it, it is up to you, do it for yourself and your family,” concluded Dr. Rodríguez.
