The Burkinabè Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, requested on Friday the support of the diplomatic corps accredited to Burkina Faso, during an exchange meeting, announced the Presidency of the Republic of Burkina Faso in a press release.
During this meeting with the diplomatic corps accredited in Burkina Faso and the representatives of international and inter-African organizations present in the country, Captain Traoré presented to all the participants the current situation prevailing in Burkina Faso and the reasons for the change in head of state.
“From January 24 to today, the security climate has deteriorated quite a bit, as has the socio-political climate”, declared the new strongman of Burkina, stressing that the meaning of the fight being waged is to give “more peace of mind to our populations”.
He affirmed, according to the press release published at the end of the meeting, that the September 30 coup once morest Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba “is part of the dynamic of working to restore security in the areas under control, to accelerate the fight once morest terrorism and to allow populations to have a peaceful life”.
“It’s just to save our homeland, our lands, our people,” he reassured. Captain Ibrahim Traoré indicated that the work has already begun, and “we are waiting for everyone’s support (…). We ask for your support”.
The press release also notes that the diplomatic corps and the international and inter-African organizations present in Burkina Faso have, through their representatives at this meeting, assured their availability to accompany Burkina Faso to meet the current challenges.
Speaking on behalf of the diplomatic corps and as dean of ambassadors, the Italian ambassador to Burkina Faso, Andrea Romussi, invited the new authorities to respect international commitments, especially with regard to the protection of diplomatic rights. some of which were the target of demonstrations on October 1 and 2, 2022 alluding to the acts of vandalism and ransacking of which the French Embassy was the victim by demonstrators hostile to French policy in Burkina Faso.
The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Burkina Faso, Barbara Manzi, wished the continuity of the efforts of dialogue and national reconciliation, relates the presidency of the Republic of Burkina Faso in its press release.
Manzi also urged the new authorities to ensure a participatory and inclusive approach, especially with regard to women and young people.
The Ambassador, Head of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Burkina Faso, Wolfram Vetter, meanwhile, felt that the EU intends to strengthen its support for Ouagadougou.
The Resident Representative of ECOWAS in Burkina Faso, Tièna Coulibaly, for his part, reiterated his organization’s support for the Burkinabè people and the transition, with regard to the commitments made during the meeting with the new authorities, adds the same source.
On behalf of the World Bank (WB), the Resident Representative of the international financial institution in Burkina Faso, Maimouna Mbow Fam, noted the importance of the existence of a legal framework, as a basis for WB interventions . She, in this sense, wanted a reasonable timetable for the implementation of this framework, adds the press release.
Ibrahim Traoré reassured them that their concerns had been taken into account before launching: “we also want to go quickly”.
