The medicines agency announced Tuesday that it would carry out “reinforced surveillance” of the side effects of anti-papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, widespread this fall in French colleges, and promised to be transparent.

Transparency to better understand the effects of the vaccine. The National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) promised this Tuesday to publish reports of adverse effects of the papilliomavirus vaccine each month, in order to be more transparent regarding its effectiveness. The Agency will also publish summaries in spring and summer 2024 before a more global report in a year.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted disease that predominantly affects women. It is the cause of several cancers of the cervix but also sometimes of the anus, throat, tongue, etc.

a disturbing vaccination campaign

Since the 2000s, the HPV vaccine has proven itself – evidence which seems to be increasingly proven. Thanks to the vaccine, the risk of one day developing uterine cancer would be reduced.

In this context, a vast vaccination campaign is being launched this fall in middle schools for 5th grade students, as President Emmanuel Macron promised at the start of the year.

This campaign was not well received by anti-vaxxers and certain health professionals who strongly doubt the effectiveness of Gardasil vaccines (which includes the anti-butterfly virus vaccine) to the point of suspecting them of being dangerous. They are accused of causing cancer themselves.

a questionable vaccine?

In reality and according to the first elements communicated: in the majority of cases, the adverse effects are very harmless and generally result in pain at the site of the injection or headaches. The ANSM recalls in a press release that “the adverse effects most frequently observed with Gardasil 9 vaccines are not serious in the vast majority of cases and disappear spontaneously within a few days, even if they can be annoying”.

In rare cases, as with other vaccines, the patient may experience discomfort or a serious allergic reaction, hence the need to continue monitoring for a quarter of an hour following the injection.
