The Transnistria region of Moldova, controlled by pro-Russian separatists, has raised its terror alert level to “red”. Several checkpoints have also been set up.
Several incidents have been reported by local authorities in the region bordering Ukraine in the past few hours. Explosions are said to have shaken the headquarters of the State Security and damaged two Soviet-era transmission masts. A military unit was also attacked.
Radio masts blown up
The blowing up of two radio masts in the Moldovan conflict region of Transnistria threatens to further aggravate the situation in the region. The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, called a Security Council meeting for the followingnoon. The radio center had transmitted Russian radio stations with two masts. Russian soldiers are stationed in Transnistria.
According to a report by the Russian news agency Tass The Security Council also reported a terrorist attack on a military unit near the city of Tiraspol. It was according to the local news agency Nowosti PMR one in three such attacks in the region.
In Moscow, high-ranking politicians spoke of a provocation: “The events in Transnistria are a provocation aimed at drawing Russia even deeper into the war in the region,” said the head of the Duma committee on the CIS, Leonid Kalashnikov.
The Ministry for State Security in the Transnistrian capital Tiraspol was shot at on Monday. No one was injured in either incident. The Security Council of Transnistria declared the red and thus the highest terror alert level in the area on Tuesday.
