Algimantas Gudaitis was born in 1934. January 2 Nemunaičiai, Alytus district. After graduating from school, 1953-1957 studied French at the then Vilnius Pedagogical Institute. 1962-1964 attended the Higher Pedagogical Courses at the Morris Torez Pedagogical Institute in Moscow. 1958-1961 was a research associate of the State Archives of Lithuania. 1961-1988 taught French at the Vilnius Engineering Construction Institute. Since 1988 worked as a freelance translator.

Algimantas Gudaitis translates fiction for children and adults from Italian and French. The first publication of his translation from Italian appeared in 1962. – this is the novel “Luna Park” by Elsa Triole.

In total, the translator has translated more than twenty works of fiction and non-fiction for adults from Italian. Among them are Raffaello Giovagnoli’s historical short story “Spartacus” (1983, 1987, 2006), Edmund De Amicis’ short story “The Heart” (1989, 2000, 2005, 2007, 2011, 2013, 2016), Sussana Tamar’s novel “Go Where Your Heart Leads” (1998, 2007), Fernando Lanzi and Gioia Lanzi’s Patron Saints and Their Symbols (2005) and others. Algimantas Gudaitis translated several novels for adults from French: Jean Cassou’s novel “Bloody Paris Days” (together with Valdas V. Petrauskas, 1971), Pierre Boulle’s novel “The Bridge over the River Kvai” (1974), Nicholas Powell’s book “Secrets of Works of Art” (2003).

Algimantas Gudaitis’s translations of children’s literature have delighted many generations of young readers. Among his translated books and writers loved by children all over the world are Tony Wolf (Forest Tales, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2004; Dragons, 1996; Masks, 1996, etc.), Peter Holeinone’ io (“The Three Little Pigs and Many Other Tales”, 1995; “The Legend of Robin Hood”, 1996, etc.), Anna Casalis (“My Most Beautiful Tales”, 2004; “Mile Goes to Kindergarten”, 2005, etc.). ) tales and stories.

Algimantas Gudaitis was admitted to the Lithuanian Writers’ Union in 1990.
