Transitional Government Exposes Plot to Attack Republic Institutions: External Support Involved

The government press release mentions a network of several serving soldiers, decommissioned soldiers and civilians whose objective would have been to attack the institutions of the Republic. The transitional government revealed the details of this scenario which would have benefited from external support according to it.

According to this press release signed by the spokesperson for the transitional government, the date of January 14 was set by the members of the dismantled network. Individuals, contacted in different military barracks in Faso, were to organize a mutiny serving as a starting point for the destabilization process. Civil society organizations would then take over, creating disorder conducive to the intervention of a commando. A commando from outside, in order to “attempt the lives of several Transition authorities and sow chaos” states the press release.

The government spokesperson assures that funding was being released and transferred from outside the country to support the operation. Several soldiers and civilians involved in this project have been arrested, according to the government, which says it is investigating to identify possible other implications.

Since last Sunday, Lieutenant-Colonel Evrard Somda, former chief of staff of the National Gendarmerie and Prosper Bassole, chief of staff of businessman Mahamadou Bonkoungou, as well as several soldiers have been under arrest.
