The transit visa in Panama for Cuban citizens is regarding to expire. The deadline for this is next July 31. It has been two years since the government of the Central American country decided to respond to the migration crisis that the region was and is still experiencing.
In March 2022, Panama began requiring a transit visa for Cubans who stopped over in that country, specifically at the Tocumen International Airport. The latest developments regarding the measure in question were announced last January. At that time, the National Migration Service of Panama announced that it would extend the transit visa for Cubans until July 31, 2024.
The aforementioned visa authorizes Cubans to remain in the transit area of Tocumen International Airport for 24 hours. The Panamanian government said that the requirement is due to the increase in Cuban travelers who are unable to be admitted into the country of their final destination.
Cubans who do not need a transit visa
Over the past two years, the measures have undergone changes, with new requirements being added and others being removed. Currently, Cubans who stop over in Panama under the following conditions do not need to require a transit visa:
-Those traveling to Cuba.
-Those who maintain a valid Panama tourist visa.
-Those with permanent residence in third countries who return to them. The same applies to Cubans who have a Green Card or who reside in countries of the European Union.
-Those who have a valid entry visa from the country of final destination.
-Those who demonstrate that they have an employment contract in the destination country.
So far, there is no information regarding a new extension for the transit visa for Cubans by the Panamanian government. To apply for the aforementioned Panama transit visa, which costs $50.00 USD, Cubans must apply at the Panamanian embassy in Havana.
