Transforming School Playgrounds: A Green and Active Design Makeover

At the start of the school year, the pupils of four schools in the city will no longer recognize their playground. Louise-Michel, La Fontaine, Diderot and Jules-Ferry will benefit from an entirely vegetated courtyard. Active design will also be part of the decor.

“It doesn’t feel like a schoolyard anymore… More like a square or a park! Even Virginia Clausse, assistant in charge of Education, can’t believe it. Since the end of the school year, at the beginning of July, the playgrounds of the Jules-Ferry, Diderot, Louise-Michel and Jean-de-La-Fontaine schools have undergone a major facelift. Gone are the good old paved courtyards, the number one enemy of schoolchildren’s knees for decades. Make way for nature and active design.

At the start of the school year, the pupils will therefore discover paths with a draining white coating (to conserve heat less), which wind between green spaces. If the lawn has already been sown, the trees, fruit shrubs, perennials and flowering plants will arrive during the All Saints holidays.

“Varied and local species” for schoolyards

“Varied, local species, with rapid growth and adapted to climate change”, promises the City. They will mainly be planted in the middle of the courtyard for better development, and no longer along the buildings as was the case until now, especially at the La Fontaine school.

New games complete the facilities, as well as “friendship benches”, supposed to promote good understanding between students. Vegetable plots and water fountains must also be installed in each of the schools.

Facilities supplemented by various markings that should encourage students to practice a little more physical activity. But for that, you will have to wait a few more days. The markings will not be made before the end of September.

It remains to see the reaction of the students. “We are completely changing the pattern of recreation. Some activities will no longer be possible, so we will have to create new things, ”explains Jean-Louis Detin, director of the Jean-de-La-Fontaine school. Response from Monday, September 4…
