-You mention very often, both you and the political leadership of the ministry, that we are very close to the complete renewal of buses. When, finally, will the citizens of the Basin be able to find that they really have the transportation befitting a 21st century capital?
– The time when the passenger public will be able to experience a quality travel experience is not long, because from the first day of assuming the responsibilities of this very sensitive sector, we invested in the organization and restructuring of the company, laying the foundations and creating the suitable infrastructures for the essential transformation of road transport. The steps taken are many and important, despite the fact that they are often “wronged” by individual negative incidents. We do not claim to have solved all the timing problems in public urban transport, but we are on the way to completing a very substantial effort that will really lead to the conquest of modern transport.
With a time horizon of summer 2025, 950 new buses with modern anti-pollution technology will have joined the transport project in Attica.
140 electric buses have already been put at the service of the passenger public. The use of electricity has multiple benefits for both citizens and the environment and, if nothing else, is an innovative action that reinforces the effort of complete modernization. At the same time, the contracts for 300 brand new leased buses and for an additional 300 natural gas buses have already been signed. In the next three months, their delivery will gradually begin, which will be completed, as we have already mentioned, within the summer of 2025. In addition, a new tender by the ministry for the supply of 700 electric buses and trolleys is under consultation. Of these, 475 will cover the needs of public urban transport in Attica.
– Lately there has been talk about the nature of road transport, for example there is concern about granting train stations and also responsibilities to private individuals, with all that this entails for urban transport. What exactly is going on?
– I can tell you with certainty that not only are we not leasing depots, but instead we are investing in our facilities, which are being upgraded to meet a holistic renewal programme. In particular, European funds that we won through European programs, such as CEF 2, have been allocated for the creation of a hydrogen filling station at our depot facilities in Liosia. The inclusion of hydrogen propulsion in transport is another pioneer of O.SY. S.A., which very soon will include, with European funding, two hydrogen buses in its transportation project.
I would also like to point out that within the next few days a competition will be announced for the recruitment of new staff, in the field of traffic, as well as administrative employees.
It therefore becomes clear the existence of a comprehensive plan of interventions for the upgrade of public urban transport in the Basin, which is being implemented step by step. And investment in public transport is a key government imperative. The rest are fictions of petty political exploitation.
