Transforming Hitler’s Birthplace: From Controversy to Security – An Austrian Police Station Project

VIENNA – Work has begun to turn the Austrian home where Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler was born in 1889 into a police station. 2026 will be completed at the earliest. The three-story building is located in Braunau, close to the German border. A police station is being built here to discourage Nazi sympathizers from visiting. There will also be a security academy to impart human rights training to police officers.

Since 1972, the building was rented out to various charitable organizations and others to prevent misuse. The differently abled care center was functioning till 2011. There are critics of the new move. One of the alternative suggestions was to start a memorial center for those who saved Jews from Nazi terror.
