Transforming Belgian Stations into Integrated Transport Hubs: Minister Georges Gilkinet’s Vision

2023-10-14 06:40:00

The Minister of Mobility, Georges Gilkinet, has launched a study with a view to making the country’s stations “connection nodes”, he revealed on Saturday in the columns of Sudinfo. The aim is to enable users getting off a train at a medium-sized station to get a local train or bus within six minutes, through the development of an “integrated timetable”.

This “real revolution”, as the minister describes it, “requires a dialogue with all the players”, namely the Regions and their transport companies.

“It will take a little time,” recognizes Mr. Gilkinet, who cites the Namur and Mons stations as examples. “There, I am launching the process, in the form of a study which must show under what conditions we can succeed: confirm that it is economically feasible, that it can be applied to the Belgian network without disproportionate investment and that it is technically feasible without impact on the current service.”

“It will be implemented during the next legislature,” assures the minister, also promising a second component which will consist of tariff integration.
