Asteroid 2024 RW1 Enters Earth’s Atmosphere Over the Philippines
On September 4, 2024, a fast-moving asteroid named 2024 RW1 was detected as it entered Earth’s atmosphere. Discovered through CCD images from the Mt. Lemmon Survey in Arizona around 5:45 UT, the asteroid measures approximately 1 meter in diameter. It was initially referred to as CAQTDL2 or X82967 and was later identified to be in 3:1 orbital resonance with Jupiter, likely classified as a carbonaceous chondrite type CM2.
The asteroid made its atmospheric entry near Luzon Island in the Philippines at 18:40 UT. The prediction of its path allowed local residents to prepare for the event, with many capturing the phenomenon on video. Notable footage was taken in Gonzaga, Cagayan, and Tuguegarao City, along with additional recordings from Taguig City. For more visuals, you can view various videos and images of this event here.
