Transform Your City: Join the Park(ing) Day Celebration on September 20th!

Park(ing) Day is a global day of action to make inner cities more livable.

This year it is also taking place in Duisburg: parking spaces in public spaces are used as living space for people for one day, for example as a green oasis or recreational area. Originally created in San Francisco in 2005, Park(ing) Day has developed into an international movement on the third Friday in September.

At 12 square meters, each parking space takes up more space than an average child’s room. With creativity and colorful ideas, we want to draw attention to the enormous amount of space cars use. Park(ing) Day wants to show how cities can put people at the center and help green spaces, playgrounds and meeting places in our cities to get their due.

Next Friday, September 20th, there will be events for Park(ing) Day at several locations in Duisburg:

  • Between 2 and 5 p.m., the ADFC will be laying turf at Mülheimer Straße 91, inviting people to sit down on its beer tent while listening to live music and visualizing what Duisburg’s streets could look like with greenery.
  • VCD, BUND and Parents for Future are offering games, sports and fun for young and old in front of the town hall from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The BUND parking lot will be green and anyone who wants to can take a cutting home with them.
  • In front of the packaging-free store at Blumenstrasse 4, a seating area is set up, a mandala is drawn with sidewalk chalk and people are invited to play board games.
  • The LEFT invites you to barbecue, play board games and have ice cream at Gravelottestrasse 28.
  • In the middle of Gneisenaustrasse, residents and passers-by are gathering ideas for making the street more livable over tea and biscuits.
  • The global climate strike by Fridays for Future on September 20th (starting at 4 p.m. on the Opera Square) is also dedicated to the topic with this year’s motto “For a car-free city” and will make a stop at the action in front of the town hall.
  • And the ADFC will visit all the action locations on a “Park(ing) Day Tour” by bike and then join the climate strike. The tour starts at 3 p.m. at Mülheimer Straße 91.
