Esteghlal FC is the thirteenth club of the Congolese attacking midfielder since the beginning of his professional career. Trained at Racing club de Lens, Gaël Kakuta instead began his professional career at Chelsea FC (England).

In the 2023-2024 sports season, Esteghlal FC finished in 2nd place in the final standings with 67 points in 30 matches. This allowed them to qualify for the Asian Champions League for the 2024-2025 season.
With the Congolese selection, Kakuta has about twenty selections for 3 goals. He was part of the campaign during the CAN 2023 in Ivory Coast. It was his first official competition with the Leopards since he joined the den in March 2017.
