Transgender women and men cannot leave Ukraine for various problems but the main one is that your passport does not match your gender identitythat is to say that it maintains its name and gender prior to its transition.
Trans people are in some cases lonely because their friends have been able to leave the country, such is the case of Zi Faámelua trans woman who was born in Crimea, territory taken by Russia in 2014 and is still in dispute with Ukraine but currently lives in Kiev.
Zi Faámelu’s parents live in Crimea and assure that they believe that the bombings are false and that it is a civil conflict, for which the woman finds himself in a lonely position to ask for help and leave Kiev.
The 31-year-old woman who participated in the singing program ‘Star Factory’ has not been able to leave Kiev despite the bombing for several reasons, one of them being that her passport has the name before her transition, known as deadnameso when trying to leave they would apply the order to deny exit to men between 18 and 60 years old.
Trans people in Ukraine they can change their name to one that represents their gender identityHowever to do so they have to go through revictimizing processes such as lengthy psychological and psychiatric evaluationswhich reinforces the stigma that being a trans person is a disorder.
Another problem that prevents Zi Faámelu from leaving Kiev is that it ensures that there is a lot transphobia in Ukraine Therefore, when leaving her house and trying to leave, she might find armed people who, with the excuse of war, kill her because of her gender identity.
While this is happening Zi Faámelu tries to survive with the latent food shortage but with the hope that his country can defend itself from the Russian invasion.
