If we take a global approach: the impact on human health and ecosystems, the greenhouse effect and global warming, the anarchic production of ozone in city centres, olfactory nuisances, etc. are all good reasons to drastically limit the pollutants present in gas emissions and fumes. We can cite, for example, particlesTHE sulfur compounds, nitrogenousthe carbon dioxideTHE metals or even the volatile organic compounds. The international community has mobilized to combat the increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions through the convention signed in June 1992 in Rio. International conferences have since been held, with varying degrees of success, in Kyoto and New York, particularly on the issue of air pollution. The annual Conferences of the Parties, including COP21 (21st Conference of the Parties) held in Paris in 2015 and COP28 in Dubai in 2023, have enabled discussion and definition of objectives between States on the management of gaseous emissions. These agreements should lead to a drastic reduction in certain pollutants present in emissions due to human activity. On a regulatory level, resulting from the ratification of these international treaties, the practical consequences of European directives, for example Directive 2008/50/EC (CAFE directive for Clean Air For Europe) are the promulgation in France of various decrees. They regulate, in particular, the levels of pollutant emissions for installations classified for environmental protection (ICPE) and for certain industrial sectors. Thus, we can cite theOrder of February 2, 1998 supplemented by amendment orders by branch of activity. These few points addressed attempt to show the need and/or obligation to reduce the pollutant loads emitted into the atmosphere due to fumes. There are processes likely to respond to this problem by reducing these pollutant emissions and these nuisances.

This article aims to qualitatively and quantitatively define the pollutants emitted in fumes, to introduce the regulatory texts in the field of pollution control, to present the methods of analysis of various undesirable compounds. Finally, treatments available alone or integrated into a process for the purification of fumes will be proposed.
