The Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR) is hosting, from October 9 to 13 in Rabat, the training workshop of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the difficulties of regulation Small Modular Reactors (SMR).

Taking part in this workshop are around twenty participants representing African nuclear safety authorities in Burkina Faso, Congo, Ivory Coast, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Rwanda, Chad, and the Union of the Comoros. as well as representatives of the national parties concerned, indicates a press release from the AMSSNuR.

Speaking at the opening of the work of this workshop, the Director General of AMSSNuR, Saïd Mouline, recalled Morocco’s commitment to sharing its experience in the field of regulation of nuclear and radiological safety and security with the countries of our continent and to be able to together identify the main challenges of regulatory control linked to the evaluation of the safety files of PMRs and their authorization.

The development of these technologies, he indicated, continues to increase around the world, recording more than 80 prototypes which will experience enormous growth in the years to come, hence the importance of this type of training initiated as part of the work of the IAEA SMR Regulators Forum and the Regulatory Harmonization Initiative, initiated in 2022 by its director general, Rafael Mariano Grossi, notes the press release.

By addressing the legal and regulatory framework for nuclear safety as well as the functions and responsibilities of a regulatory body as set out in IAEA standards, this workshop will improve understanding and appreciation of the issues linked to these new technologies.

It goes without saying that to regulate SMRs, regulatory bodies should understand their various designs and types of operation in order to be able to apply the principles of defense in depth as well as the graduated approach when considering the use of passive safety devices inherent to their designs.

Applications include, among others, power generation, seawater desalination, hydrogen production, decarbonization, heat production.

Note that this workshop will see significant contributions from internationally renowned experts from the IAEA, the Institute of Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN), and the Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) as well as exchanges of information and experiences in the field of nuclear regulation

This workshop promises to be an enriching forum, promoting the sharing of knowledge and experience between stakeholders in the nuclear sector. It will help strengthen regulations and best practices to ensure the safety and security of Small Modular Reactors.
