training to fight dengue fever and chikunguniya

A training program on Mosquito Mass Production will be organized from August 22 to 26, 2022 by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. These courses which focus on the use of sterile insect techniques will be delivered in conjunction with the International Atomic Energy Agency. This news stems from the weekly cabinet meeting held on Friday August 12 under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth.

This initiative of the Ministry of Health aims to contribute to the reduction of certain insects, like the mosquito Aedes albopictus. It is the vector of dengue fever and chikunguniya. Male mosquitoes in this category will also be released regularly in specific areas to be closely examined.

Note that a vector is a living organism that transmits an infectious element from an infected animal to a man or another animal. The vectors are often arthropods, such as mosquitoes, ticks, flies, fleas and lice.

In addition, this project will in particular improve the quality of life of Mauritians and tourists. In a nutshell, this project provides for the establishment of a national team responsible for assessing communication and practical skills, as well as raising public awareness of techniques for fighting sterile insects.

Namely, insect sterilization techniques are among the most environmentally friendly insect pest control methods that have emerged.
