They are trained in taking a Pap smear on a mannequin, a test that they then perform on real patients for the timely detection of lesions in the cervix. They participate in community events, thanks to the link between the Faculty and the Rotary Club of Xalapa

11/09/2023, Xalapa, Ver.- In order to prepare professionals with broad perspectives within the labor field, the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Veracruzana (UV) places emphasis on the preparation of its students, providing them with knowledge and skills through constant training and professional practices in the real world.

Duaré García Ramírez, responsible for the educational experience (EE) General Pathology and Specific Pathology, explained that within the development of skills is the collection of Papanicolaou samples, a procedure in which the student is taught to carefully extract cells from the surface of the cervix that are examined under a microscope to determine if there is cervical cancer or cellular changes that might trigger the condition.

The pathologist highlighted that EE addresses the issue of neoplasms, one of them being cervical cancer. Thanks to the aforementioned examination, the disease has been on the decline in recent years. This is important because it became the leading cause of death in women, a place currently occupied by breast cancer.

The test, also known as exfoliative cytology to determine the presence or absence of neoplastic diseases, is one of the basic activities in the doctor’s training and represents one of the procedures that can be carried out in an office, which is why the training It allows you to acquire skills and experience in taking samples, which, in turn, is the first induction in contact with the patient, which is followed by the brief clinical history.

García Ramírez added that the exercise is divided into two phases: the first is carried out with a mannequin-simulator in which the students carry out the complete activity (interview and preventive aspects); In the second, the knowledge acquired is applied with real patients, which allows them to have a different vision between simulator and patient.

It is important to mention that they are accompanied by teachers at all times.

The study allows them to identify lesions at their beginning, which, if not treated properly, can lead to cervical cancer. “The objective is not to go looking for cancer, but to detect lesions in a timely manner to propose curative treatments. We must not forget that cervical cancer is preventable,” she pointed out.

The teacher also announced that through academic Martha Leticia Zamudio, the Faculty of Medicine maintains a link with the Rotary Club of Xalapa and in mutual coordination they carry out community health care days.

Dhamar Celic Jiménez Monge, a fifth semester student, said that as a medical student it is important to be taught how to take Pap smears, which is essential for prevention because it helps detect primary lesions, sexually transmitted diseases such as the human papilloma or risk factors, and from there make an accurate diagnosis.
