Several reports on social networks on May 9 denounced that the train from Havana to Artemisa did not pick up anyone at its destination and “they were quartered because they had not been paid for two months.”
The local government has offered its version of events through a note published by the Provincial Directorate of Transportation, in which it describes the fact as “negligence” and does not clarify what motivated the workers to refuse to transfer passengers with tickets.
The official statement states that “on the followingnoon of May 9, the rail service from the Artemisa Station – Havana was canceled due to the negligence of the crew members belonging to Antillana de Acero.”
“The Union of Cuban Railways, together with the authorities of the province, created a commission to investigate the causes and conditions that originated this unfortunate incident and apply the corresponding organizational and disciplinary measures, so that events like these are not repeated.” they added.
Likewise, they reported that “the decision was made to transfer the passengers who were at said station by bus and the conditions were created to restore rail service at the established times.”
“Timely, the measures adopted will be reported,” said the text of the Directorate of Transportation in Artemisa.
STRIKE BY TRAIN WORKERS IN ARTEMISA, CUBA
From the Municipal Administration of Artemisa they added in Facebook: “political, governmental and administrative authorities of the territory exchanged opinions with the passengers who until that moment were being affected by the crew of drivers”.
Orlando Pereda Mojena, Provincial Director of Inspection in the Provincial Administration, also said in a comment that “this was not the space” for workers to denounce that they had not been paid for months.
While some users called for “serious measures with the irresponsible and negligent”, many others demanded that the government explicitly disclose the causes of the workers’ strike.
