Train Mishap: German Driver Leaves 80 Passengers Behind

A German train driver failed to notice that several cars of a regional train he was driving from Berlin to Poland separated at a small local stop outside the German capital and continued on his way, leaving behind some 80 passengers.

The rear part of the train separated from the front part at Alt Rosenthal station, east of Berlin, on Thursday, without the driver noticing, regional train operator NEB confirmed on Friday.

The mechanic didn’t realize it until the next stop. He then drove the train, which was carrying some 20 to 25 passengers, to the previous stop to collect the rear part of the convoy. The 70 to 80 “forgotten” people had to wait a little over an hour and a half.

“This has never happened before,” according to the spokesperson for the regional railway company.

The mishap led to delays elsewhere on the network, with the line temporarily closed while the train was turned around.
