Train derailment in Russia – at least 140 injured

The news agency Tass previously reported that at least 20 were injured, while the news agency Interfax reported that the number was up to 100. Russia’s state railways states that at least 140 have been injured, but that these are mostly minor injuries.

– Around 140 have received cuts and bruises, says the railway company, which adds that 15 people, including three children, have been sent to hospital for treatment.

A total of eight carriages were derailed in the accident, which occurred when a lorry attempted to cross a level crossing and collided with the train despite the traffic light being red. Over 800 passengers were on board the train when the accident happened, according to Tass.

The condition of the lorry driver is serious after the collision, which occurred when the train was traveling at around 65 kilometers per hour. He was thrown around 15 meters in the collision, according to the train company.

Pictures from the area, which are circulating on social media, show several overturned train carriages on a field in an uninhabited area. Rescue workers are working to free passengers.

The train was on its way from Kazan to Adler on the Black Sea. Kazan is located around 850 kilometers east of the Russian capital Moscow.

The railway is considered one of the most important and reliable means of transport in Russia, which is the world’s largest country by area.

Accidents are relatively rare, but in recent years there have been several acts of sabotage on railway tracks by opponents of Russia’s war on Ukraine. The railway network is also important for the Russian military, which uses it to supply the rapids in Ukraine with, among other things, weapons.
